Vevcani, is a Macedonian village on the border with Albania, so close to the border that its inhabitants have decided to self-declared “Republic of Vevcani”. A village where the atmosphere of old times. Every year they celebrate the carnival in Vevcani on January 13, the day of St. Basil the Great, a day that according to the old calendar marked the new beginning of the year. A carnival with ancient origins, which found its roots in paganism and Christianity, the people of Vevcani claim that it has thousands of years, the carnival was used to chase away evil spirits and wish a good and prosperous year. A tradition that still continues to repeat between typical and fun outfits.
Vevcani, un villaggio macedone ai confini con l’Albania,talmente al confine che i suoi abitanti hanno deciso di autodichiararsi “repubblica di vevcani”. Un villaggio dove si respira un’aria di altri tempi. Ogni anno si festeggia il carnevale di Vevcani, il 13 gennaio,giorno di san Basilio il grande, giorno che secondo l’antico calendario segnava l’inizio dell’anno nuovo. Un carnevale con origini antiche, che fondano le proprie radici tra paganesimo e cristianesimo, gli abitanti di Vevcani sostengono che abbia migliaia di anni, il carnevale serviva a cacciare via gli spiriti cattivi ed augurare un anno buono e prosperoso. Una tradizione antica che ancora oggi continua a ripetersi tra abiti tipici e divertimento.
